Abstract
This article reconstructs the genesis of the formulation and writing of Pedagogy of the oppressed by Paulo Freire, his most important work. Afterwards, it historically reconstitutes the history of the editions, especially the first, namely for the one held in Brazil, because of its prohibition imposed by the military dictatorship that had settled in the country in April 1964 and which banished Paulo Freire, as well as his thought as "subversive" of the imposed autocratic order.
