Tununa Mercado. The exile of multiple knowledge

Abstract

This article aims to take a biographical tour in the life of the writer and journalist Tununa Mercado, with the clear purpose of placing her personal experience and her literary work, as an undeniable way of understanding the social and political experience of being exiled and particularly in Mexico during the seventies-eighties. In 1974, she went to Mexico to live her exile in the company of her family. She returned to Argentina in 1987. During her time in Mexico she intertwined journalism, literature, and knitting with political activism. Her previous experience as a teacher in France, during Ongania’s dictatorship government, was the starting point for the adaptation process that she would experience, years later, in an unknown territory. This entire experience would be captured in her book En estado de memoria, an indisputable reference of the exile dynamic in Mexico and its multiple learnings and cultural values.
